UAE Digital Tax Refund Service: First digital tax refund service for tourists unveiled in UAE

The UAE has become the first to introduce a paperless tax refund process. It is an excellent relief for tourists.

According to Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director-general of the Federal Tax Authority, the platform has been connected with businesses so that invoices can be generated electronically. As a result, when people go to airport terminals to obtain VAT refunds, they won’t have to carry paper records of their transactions.

The press conference to discuss this service was attended by officials from the Federal Tax Authority, Seddiqi Holding, Planet Tax, GMG, Apparel, and Rasool Khoory.

In 2018, the UAE implemented a 5% VAT on purchases, and visitors can request a VAT refund on products purchased at businesses upon departing the country.

Obtaining Documents For Tax Refund: A Hectic Task For Travelers

Al Al Bustani claimed that organizing refund claim paperwork and submitting it was time-consuming process for travelers. The lengthy process is caused by evaluating and auditing this data at the airport. The Federal Tax Authority and Planet worked together to find a solution by ensuring the information was ready before the visitor arrived at the airport.

The UAE Becomes the First to Achieve This Landmark

Thanks to this effort, the UAE is the first nation in the world to achieve this milestone.

Since all the partners have been connected electronically, travelers no longer need to worry about carrying paper and stickers to get a VAT refund.

The process is very quick after the invoice is published, and users can always check the amount of their refunds on the Planet portal. 95% of firms will use this service in the first year after it is introduced.

Self-Service Kiosks Deployed at Malls, Lodges, Ports, and so on

According to Al Bustani, self-service kiosks have been deployed at shopping centers, lodges, and port facilities across the country (land, sea, and air), where travelers can verify their e-receipt before going to the airport. As a result, their documentation will be ready for them when they get there, and they can claim their refund at the airport.

The efficiency of the process is relatively quick after the invoice has been uploaded, and travelers may always check the amount of their refunds on the Planet portal.

Over 100 kiosks have now been installed by Planet nationwide, and more will follow. In 10 business days, the amount will be returned to the account or card.
