Tax Refund 2022: Why did you get an unexpected Tax Refund?
Some people in the United States may find that they get a tax refund that they were not expecting, but the reason behind this is relatively straightforward. Usually, anyway.
The usual explanation is that there was a mathematical error when you filed your taxes, so you may have been expecting to pay more and this was not the case.
Why did I get an unexpected Tax Refund?
There are millions of mathematical errors that are picked up by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) when they go through tax returns, but obviously some do still slip through the cracks.
For the ones that are noticed by the IRS, with this being the majority, a tax refund can be sent out to address any difference if you are deemed to have overpaid.
Another reason why you may get an unexpected tax refund is if you forgot to include tax that you had already paid, which is often the case with independent contractors and self-employed people.
What to do if I made an error on my tax return
One of the methods that the IRS suggests is to use the interactive tax assistant tool on their website, as this can allow you to check if you need to file a new return in order to correct the error.
However, if there is a mathematical error on the tax return, as the IRS will look to clear this up, thus eliminating the need to send a new return. If the IRS does need more information from you, they are likely to send a letter.
For those who do end up having to send an amended return, you can track the progress of it using the IRS‘ Where’s My Amended Return? tool. These can take up to 16 weeks to process and up to three weeks to show up in the system.
