IRS and AARP offer free tax preparation help – Marin Independent Journal
Did you know the IRS offers free basic tax preparation help for qualifying lower-income and older taxpayers? Their two programs, in which volunteers trained by the IRS assist taxpayers in preparing and filing their tax returns, are Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly. You may qualify for VITA if you made income of less than $57,000, have a disability or speak limited English. You may qualify for TCE if you are age 60 or older. To find the nearest VITA/TCE location near you, go to irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep.
The AARP offers a similar service called the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. Tax-Aide provides free virtual and in-person tax assistance to all persons with a focus on taxpayers over age 50 and individuals with low to moderate incomes. You can find Tax-Aide locations at taxaide.aarpfoundation.org.
Keep in mind, both IRS and AARP programs are not intended for complicated returns.
